What LiteNet knows about you, and why.
A dial-up ISP sees a great deal by design. This Policy says exactly what LiteNet collects, what it does with it and who else sees it, in the same plain language as the rest of the site.
Effective 21 September 2026. Last revised 2 September 2026. This Policy is part of the Terms of Service.
1. Who is responsible
The LiteNet Group, LLC, doing business as LiteNet Connectivity Solutions ("LiteNet"), PO Box 1340, Forsyth, Montana 59327, United States, dialup@litenet.tel, is the controller of the personal information described here. This Policy covers the LiteNet website, the account website, the dial-up Service, the subscriber portal, mailbox and news services, and the support system. It does not cover any website, service or person you reach through the Service, each of which has its own practices.
2. What LiteNet collects, and where it comes from
From your application. Your name or handle, your e-mail address, the username you ask for, a description of your computer, operating system and modem, the number you expect to dial, a telephone number if you give one, the plan you ask for, any code you enter, any note you write, and the fact that you accepted the policies. The website also keeps, for one hour, the Internet address the application came from, to limit repeated submissions; it is not written into the application. From your account. Your username, display name, e-mail address, equipment description, plan, status, billing preferences (monthly or yearly, reminders on or off, automatic payment on or off, the exact consent text and the time and address it was given from), your web delivery choice, and any changes you make to these. Passkeys are stored as public keys; the private half never leaves your device. Recovery codes are stored hashed. Your dial-up password. The authentication method dial-up software of the period uses requires the password to be held in a readable form, so LiteNet stores it that way, on the server, in files readable only by the server's administrators and the programs that check it. It may also serve as your mailbox password. From every call. The time the call started and ended, the number dialled, the calling telephone number where the telephone network supplies it, the modem rate negotiated, the network address assigned, the amount of data sent and received, the reason the call ended, the connection profile applied, and the authentication method used. From the connection while you are dialled in. Every byte of a dial-up call passes through LiteNet's equipment. LiteNet's web transformation service (Retroproxy) receives every web request you make, fetches the page on your behalf, and logs the address, the site, the page, the size, the time taken and the result of each request, together with your session address. It records a description of the browser you are using, as the browser reports it, to decide how to transform pages and to show you and the operators what it decided. LiteNet's firewall records one line per new outgoing connection (the addresses and ports, not the content), and refuses and records certain kinds of traffic. LiteNet's resolver answers your domain name queries and may log them. None of the content of your web pages, mail or other traffic is retained by these logs, but all of it is readable by LiteNet while it is in transit, and pages fetched through Retroproxy are cached on the server for a short time. Your mailbox and news. Mail sent to your LiteNet address is stored, unencrypted, on LiteNet's server until you collect or delete it, and mail you send through LiteNet passes through and is logged by LiteNet's mail server (sender, recipient, size, time, result; not content, except where a message is queued). News articles you post go to the newsgroup you post them to, which may be public and permanent. From billing. Invoices, payments, allocations, refunds, credits, codes applied, the last four digits and brand of a saved card, and the identifiers the payment processor uses. LiteNet never receives, stores or sees a full card number, expiry date or security code; those go directly from your browser to the payment processor. From support. Requests, replies, attachments you upload, and the time of each. From the websites. Ordinary web server logs of the public and account websites (address, page, time, browser). The public website sets no cookies and uses no analytics, tracking or advertising. The account website sets one session cookie when you sign in. Neither uses any third-party script except, on the payment page, the payment processor's card field, and, on the application form when it is turned on, a bot-detection widget from Cloudflare. Trial fingerprints. To keep the free trial to one per person, LiteNet stores one-way fingerprints (cryptographic hashes) of the e-mail account, the equipment description and, once a call has been made, the calling telephone number. The original values cannot be recovered from the fingerprints. This is not browser fingerprinting and nothing is placed on your computer.3. What LiteNet uses it for
- To review applications, create and run accounts, answer calls, authenticate you, count your simultaneous calls, apply your plan's limits, deliver mail and news, transform web pages, and provide the account website and support.
- To bill you, take payment, send invoices, receipts, reminders and notices, apply codes, and keep the records the law requires of a business that takes recurring payments.
- To keep the Service working and safe: to find faults, measure capacity, detect and stop abuse, enforce the Acceptable Use Policy, attribute a complaint to a session, and protect other subscribers, the servers and the networks the Service depends on.
- To tell you about your account: notices these policies require, service changes, price changes, outages, and replies to your requests. LiteNet does not send marketing e-mail.
- To comply with the law, respond to lawful requests, and establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
- To improve the Service, using aggregate statistics that do not identify anybody.
4. Who LiteNet shares it with
LiteNet does not sell personal information, does not rent or trade it, does not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and does not use it for advertising. It is shared only:
- With the providers who deliver the Service, each of which receives only what its part requires: the telephone carrier that terminates calls to LiteNet's numbers (which sees the calling and called numbers and the call's timing, as any telephone carrier does); the payment processor, Square, which receives your name, e-mail address, the amount and the card details you enter directly with it; the hosting providers on whose equipment and networks the servers run; and, when it is turned on, the bot-detection provider for the application form, which receives the ordinary details of the browser submitting it. Each acts under its own privacy policy and, where LiteNet has one, an agreement limiting what it may do.
- With the websites and people you communicate with. When you visit a site through the Service, the site sees a request from LiteNet's address, not yours, together with whatever your browser sends; when you send mail or post news, the recipient sees what you sent.
- With the domain controllers of an affiliated organisation, for staff accounts only: a username carrying a domain is authenticated by that organisation's directory, which then sees that username and the outcome. Public subscribers' credentials are never sent there.
- When the law requires it: in response to a subpoena, court order, warrant or other lawful request; to comply with a legal obligation; or where LiteNet believes in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of LiteNet, its subscribers or the public, or to investigate fraud or abuse. LiteNet will tell you about a request for your information where the law allows and it is practical to do so.
- With a successor, if LiteNet or the Service is sold, merged or transferred, in which case your information goes with it under this Policy.
- With your consent, for anything else.
5. How long LiteNet keeps it
- Application records: for as long as the account they led to exists, and for a reasonable time after a declined or withdrawn application so a repeat can be recognised.
- Account records, call records, usage totals and billing records: for the life of the account and for as long afterwards as accounting, tax and consumer-protection law require, which LiteNet treats as seven years. The audit trail of changes to an account is kept for ten years.
- Web transformation logs and firewall logs: about thirty days, then deleted by rotation. Cached copies of transformed pages: minutes to hours.
- Mailbox contents: until you delete them, and for up to thirty days after the account closes, after which they are deleted.
- Support requests: for the life of the account and a reasonable time after.
- Trial fingerprints: indefinitely, because their purpose is to recognise a repeat.
- Backups: LiteNet keeps rolling backups of the server for recovery; information deleted from the live system may persist in a backup for a limited time until that backup is rotated.
6. How LiteNet protects it
The servers are administered by a small number of people over authenticated, encrypted connections; the account website is served over HTTPS and protected by passkeys; the operations console is reachable only through a private network; the files that hold credentials are readable only by the programs that need them; and the software is written and reviewed with security in mind. But LiteNet is a small operation, no system is perfectly secure, and the dial-up connection itself is by design unencrypted. Do not send over it anything you cannot afford to have read.
7. Your choices and your rights
- See and change. The account website shows your details, your plan, your usage, your invoices, every message LiteNet has sent you, and your choices, and lets you change your details, your web delivery mode, your reminders, your automatic payment, your username and your password.
- Leave. You can cancel on the account website at any time. Records that LiteNet must keep by law, or needs to enforce its terms or recognise a repeat trial, are kept as described in section 5; everything else is deleted when the account closes and its retention period ends.
- Ask. Write to dialup@litenet.tel from the address on your account to ask what LiteNet holds about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted where the law does not require it to be kept. LiteNet answers within the time the applicable law allows and will not treat you differently for asking.
- State privacy laws. If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana and others), you may have rights to access, correct, delete and port your personal information, to opt out of its sale or sharing for targeted advertising, and to appeal a refusal. LiteNet does not sell or share personal information for advertising and does not profile you, so there is nothing to opt out of; the other rights are exercised by writing to the address above, and an appeal is made the same way and is considered by a different person. LiteNet does not respond to browser "Do Not Track" or opt-out signals, because it has no tracking to switch off.
- Outside the United States. The Service is offered from and operated in the United States and your information is stored there. If you use the Service from elsewhere you consent to that transfer. LiteNet does not target the Service at residents of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or other jurisdictions with data-transfer restrictions, and does not offer it to them.
8. Children
The Service is for adults. LiteNet does not knowingly collect information from anybody under 18, and does not knowingly allow anybody under 13 to use it. If you believe a child has an account, write to LiteNet and it will be closed and the information deleted.
9. Cookies and similar things
The public website sets no cookies. The account website sets one cookie, which holds a random session identifier and nothing else, when you sign in, and clears it when you sign out; it is marked so that it is sent only over HTTPS and is not readable by scripts. The payment page loads the payment processor's card field, which may set its own cookies under its own policy. The subscriber portal reached over dial-up sets no cookies at all. LiteNet uses no analytics, advertising, pixels, fingerprinting or tracking of any kind.
10. Changes to this Policy
LiteNet may change this Policy by posting the revised version with a new effective date and, for a material change, by e-mailing subscribers at least fourteen days before it takes effect. Continued use after the effective date is acceptance.
11. Contact
Questions, requests and complaints about privacy go to dialup@litenet.tel, or by post to the address in section 1. LiteNet answers every message from a subscriber.
